The Department of Foreign Languages was established in 1978. It opens English courses for non-English majors at both undergraduate level and graduate level, and opens second foreign language courses: Japanese, German and French. Besides, it has Linguistics Program and MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting) Program which offer courses for graduate students of English majors.
The department has 5 professors, 15 associate professors, 12 lecturers and nearly 20 international teachers. There are 13 supervisors whose research interests range from cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, second language acquisition, language testing, stylistics, corpus linguistics, phonetics and phonology, discourse analysis, functional linguistics, translation theory and practice and interpretation theory and practice.
The department carries out the principle of laying equal emphasis on teaching and research and of doing research to serve teaching. The Linguistics Program working with the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences does research in relationship between phonetics learning and reading comprehension among Chinese ESL learners. The MTI Program offers translation and interpreting service to academic conferences hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
